I don't think sshd is on by default in Knoppix. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=49582 suggests it may be on by default in Arch. So, booting with an Arch live CD (and hoping that the BIOS is set up to boot CD-ROM ahead of hard drive) may be one way to attack it.
