I tried it between two Ubuntu systems (Lucid and Maverick) and it worked.

This is an interesting feature but I don't have much need for shell scripts that
directly access the network.  I DO use curl frequently in shell scripts but this
does not seem like a good substitute since curl handles a lot of the network and
http aspects behind the scenes.
