[PLUG] Apache 2.3

Geoff -- During the discussion at Wednesday’s Meeting and in conversation afterwards, you asked about using a newer perl with mod_perl (unfortunately you need to recompile it), and I mentioned that I was attempting to build Apache 2.3 from source (my motivation is mod_auth_form).

It went pretty smoothly, I did it once, and it worked.

Now that I’ve had some time to play with it, I look forward to a mod_perl-less future. Mod_proxy_fcgi is extremely easy to set up and doesn’t need to be re-compiled for a new perl. The one drawback it has is that it only works with fcgi in external mode (which means you must kill the fcgi server and then start it again rather than touch dispatch.fcgi). Unfortunately mod_proxy_fcgi is one of the many Apache 2.4 improvements that aren’t available for the current stable version, and the current 2.3 build is the beginning of the 2.4 beta cycle.

If you’re interested in trying it out for yourself this article was most helpful (building 2.3 is pretty much the same as 2.2).
