[PLUG] Surveillance cameras

Somebody seems to be messing with our trash, and I want to set up one or two cameras to see if I can catch whoever it is in the act. I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions on a setup that is cost effective and works with Linux. Something with wireless support would be ideal, and I would like to have at least a day or two of footage on disk at any given time that I can go back and look through. Is this realistic? Also, can anyone recommend software, which runs on Linux, that will allow me to easily find out what happened without spending hours watching the footage captured by the camera?

TIA
