Ah, first: start the system with a live CD and copy your home directory to an external drive or network share.
That is, if you don't already have such a backup.

Then, proceed with a re-install from scratch.

I always do a fresh install on a new hard drive when I'm upgrading my main workstation. [1]

[Note 1]: I *did* upgrade my laptop from Lucid to Maverick without any problems - but I had a backup.
