Nope - I hung onto 3.5 until THAT started falling apart, which was a
while after kde4 came out since it was no longer maintained.  I then
tried out kde4 and it was way too much of a resource hog for my taste.

I think I might just give it a shot and see what happens.  I'll be
sure to check my RAM use before/after though - and of course build it
with -Os.  :)
