Now that is a really handy tip.  Thanks!  Sure enough my konsole was
256-color capable, but this was not enabled by default, and I needed
to edit screenrc per the links to get it to work in screen.

Oh, I found I had to tweak my default colors as well - some became a
bit darker with 256-color support.
