Theoretically you can sync contacts with Carddav.  Zimbra open source supports it I'm pretty sure and it works but I found it unreliable in 6.x with the iPhone.  It's worth trying in 7.x or even just with Android or even the latest iOS as it's not impossible that my problem was on the client side.

ActiveSync contact syncing does work but of course requires a licensed version.
