The change in behavior is due to the upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich. It
used to be that the SD card was a separate volume that was mounted by
the OS, and then unmounted and exposed as a USB mass storage device to
connected computers. This proved to be annoying to a lot of
developers, since major portions of application data would then
disappear when you plugged in the phone. The newer approach is to use
the Media Transport Protocol so that it can keep the SD card mounted
and still provide a view of it to the computer. Unfortunately, linux
support for MTP is abysmal. I haven't found *any* browser that will
work to transfer more than a few meg before stalling out.

The newer approach of fixing the SD card into the device is related.
Again it's because the availability of application data was undefined
until the application itself attempted to load the data. So, a user
who popped their SD card might suddenly find many of their
applications failing to respond. Or worse, assuming that there *was*
no SD card and reloading their required data on the main volume. I was
super irked with the change myself at first, but upon further
reflection (and a few months of using the phone), I've discovered that
it's really not an issue at all. Backup/restore is really the only
place I've had a problem--and I solved that with SwiFTP, which
provides an FTP server on the phone.

Oh! And the Samsung OLED screens are the bee's knees. My Galaxy Nexus
is the only phone that's been a serviceable GPS device in my car
during the day.
