Re: [PLUG] Debian packaging system

Just to start with the obvious, have you run "apt-get update" to make sure your using the latest list of sources/packages?

After that, I know making sure you have the right repositories/sources can be a pain.
Does the Maemo have special repos or do they share with any other Debian distros?

Hi all,

At last night's west meeting I brought up a problem I was having with my
smart phone. It is a Nokia N900 and runs the Maemo distribution of Linux,
which is a Debian derivative. There are two kernels available, the standard
kernel and the power kernel. To do wifi or Bluetooth tethering among other
functions requires the power kernel.

A while back I had a problem with the power kernel, so I cleaned it out and
restored the standard kernel. I am now trying to re-install the power
kernel, where I get a broken packages error with one of the modules
(kernel-power-flasher). The complete error is:

Kernel-power-flasher: predepends: kernel power (= 1:2.6.28-10power50) but
1:2.6.28-10power51r1 is to be installed.
E: Broken Package

I have posted this problem to the Maemo forum but only got so far, no one
had a solution, and as far as I know, no one else is having a problem with
this. It seems to be something in the packaging system that is corrupted.

I have tried doing apt-get purge to the four related modules (kernel-power,
kernel-power-settings, kernel-power-modules and kernel-power-flasher)
followed by apt-get clean and then re-installing in the order suggested on
the maemo forum. All but the last one install mostly without problem. I do
have to use the --fix-missing switch when reinstalling kernel-power.

The Maemo forum thread is here:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=85665&page=14

Starting 4th post down (ehj666).

My question is really about the packaging system. Is there something I can
do above "apt-get clean" to better clear out the related packages and any
legacy files that may be lying around before re-installing. Any other ideas
what may be going on here?

Thanks,
Eric
