That is, something that allows you to upload/download files from any browser on any OS. SMB/VPN/etc really are a different kind of solution to the problem. I could tell my mother to log into my website and upload a file with her browser. I couldn't tell her to just set up a VPN and SMB share to do the same. Heaven help her if the file is on a feature phone that doesn't do much more than http. The whole attraction of solutions like dropbox is that they are easy to use with no dependencies beyond a browser. They might be more complicated on the server, but mere mortals don't have to maintain the server.
