[PLUG] Strange linux desktop problem

Last night, my desktop- whether I log in using Cinnamon or Classic Gnome as the GUI- displays the entire contents of my home directory. It's not just symbolic links- it's the actual files. If I remove one from the desktop or root directory, it's gone in the other.

I've never seen this. Any thoughts about what happened, how to fix it, and how to prevent it from happening in the future?
