What Rich said. But I didn't even get that complicated. OP said "using Cinnamon or Classic Gnome" and I knew that Cinnamon is based on Gnome, so that went into my simple Google search and...

I may also have read somewhere that if '~/Desktop/' is deleted it'll fail down to '~/' since presumably it has to have something.
