One big thing that will probably change for you (depending on your
distro) is journald.

It is compatible with syslog, so you can certainly run any of the
syslog implementations on the side. However, systemd does its native
logging in journald.

Since it is likely to become fairly integrated with most distros, it
is worth understanding how it impacts you.

Now, you can set journald to just send everything to another syslog
and to store its own local data on tmpfs, so it will be like it
doesn't exist unless you use the systemd tools for status updates/etc.

That said, I don't have much personal experience with journald, and my
own logging needs are pretty light compared to any serious sysadmin,
so I won't tell you what the right answer is. It would just be
something I'd want to understand if I were in your shoes.
