Re: [PLUG] Ultrabook for Linux Recommendations?

I ended up getting a Dell Inspiron 7000 17" touchscreen.  When I received it, I was surprised how nice it was. It was definitely a great price for a great laptop. Arch loaded great, no issues with drivers. Alas, I shipped it back to Dell on Tuesday for a refund. In the end, there seemed to be a slight design flaw. Whenever I told it to shutdown, it would reboot. Seems there were a lot of others out there, even Win8 users, that experienced the same problem.

So I am back on the hunt. I'll look into the x220.  Thank you.

I've been running Kubuntu on an x220 for years, no complaints!

I have had no trouble with Ubuntu 13.10 on Lenovo x200s units,   SSD disk and 4GB RAM.
Everything worked, but that is a core-2 duo unit.  The 9 cell battery life could be 10+ hours.

I see the x220/x230 are closer to what you ask for but 3x the price,   anyone have experience with those ?

Subject: [PLUG] Ultrabook for Linux Recommendations?

Good Afternoon!

I need to buy a compact type notebook. I was wondering if anyone has experience trying to put Linux on any of the ultrabooks (Lenovo, Dell, ASUS, etc.).  The main purpose of the notebook will be android and java development. (Eclipse and Android Studio)

Preferred specs:
- Arch Linux
- Intel i7 CPU
- Intel or Nvida GPU (Never had great luck with AMD/ATI)
- 8gb RAM (or so)
- 500gb+ mechanical HD

I strongly prefer Lenovo but I haven't been able to find anyone that has successfully made Linux fully work on those ultrabooks.  Dell seems to be the most Linux friendly but my last two company laptops have been Dells and I have been far from impressed. Any ideas? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Lowell
