Subject: [PLUG] printer not showing up in ubuntu

I am trying to get an HP photosmart 7850 working in ubuntu 12.04.  I realize this is an old printer, but someone gave me a cartridge for it for free so I thought I'd try to get it working.  I tried 2 different printer cables thinking maybe it was the cable but the printer just doesn't show up.  As you can see below the system log, lsub, and dmesg give no indication that there is a printer connected.  It powers on, but I  am not sure this printer still works.  I haven't had a working printer in a number of years, but decided to try to revive this one now I have a good ink cartridge for it.  I seem to remember that this printer worked fine in ubuntu 8.04 and on mac os x years ago.  Any hints?
