It took me all of about two minutes to flash a sysupgrade image from ddwrt over ssh, a few minutes to set it up for switch+wlan, and just a few minutes more to bridge my FIOS router and use openwrt as my gateway. i configured it to register dynamic DNS with namecheap easily enough and have all my firewall rules configured. I'll look into things like VPN another day, but I have to say that installing modules on openwrt is an absolute breeze.
