it's probably having you install separately to each drive- unable to
check the actual howto at the moment.

you can use mdadm on /boot just fine, just be sure:

1.) the partitions are set to raid auto-detect
2.) they are formatted with mdadm --metadata=0.90

2. is very important; traditional BIOS booting will not work if the
metadata version is above 0.90 due to where the superblocks are placed
on the disk.
