I was wondering what everyone's opinion on a laptop specifically for linux.
I know of system76 and the laptop we got my father-in-law from there is a
nice machine but I wanted to know what options there were.

I've had good luck with Lenovo's T series.

Dell still makes laptops preloaded with Ubuntu, I've owned several and I
have no complaints. I used to have one of their N series netbooks but
replaced it with a toshiba with better specs that I got for free. I dual
boot ubuntu and windows 10 preview on it.

Last week Dell only sold two "business class" laptops with Ubuntu
preloaded..
Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition
<http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/xps-13-linux/pd>
Dell Precision M3800
<http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/precision-m3800-workstation/pd>
This week they seem to have added the M2800. They also have several
consumer, low cost laptops with Ubuntu preloaded. Just filter by OS.

My M4800 sells with Ubuntu, as does the 6430U I have. A surprising
percentage of the Latitude, XPS, and Precision lines can be shipped with
Ubuntu + support for same, if you just ask nicely.
