Just a quick correction- the package is typically named
smartmon/smartmon-tools, but the binary itself is typically named
smartctl. Other distirbutions may change this, but as I recall the main
ones use that scheme.

Otherwise, solid advice from Lee here:

"You can also have it scan the disk,  but if there are major errors,
it's best to get data off quickly before doing anything else."

Power-on time is the most important factor when a drive's failing. # of
write cycles is a close second.
