Just a quick correction- the package is typically named smartmon/smartmon-tools, but the binary itself is typically named smartctl. Other distirbutions may change this, but as I recall the main ones use that scheme. Otherwise, solid advice from Lee here: "You can also have it scan the disk, but if there are major errors, it's best to get data off quickly before doing anything else." Power-on time is the most important factor when a drive's failing. # of write cycles is a close second. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://www.enigmail.net/ iQIcBAEBCgAGBQJVqvXSAAoJEIwATC+TSB9rUkUP/3uoLNBnCL9c2Y10JAzwP/Wv iAVOZvEm3d2uaNvlE1aVMjJT7pQdWgsF+3OhBSOOM43M8HozmcgSOFqwQ30OGzQQ Lvmyp3NGwxKhWs2CQNjZYQ6nWS9cuIPKwVqTRK5EnbiUoZ7rZdFSfd/Lm7GzrWr3 Pl7Z+49jrL0dYhBCNJXGpJJS7JivDs+8x66GVgNPbC63yxFgj4SdNDjtpMMtPmma NKAgooQlqyegOjelXghsBvD1jFN27+lDm+z7bP1p7AUmmMTuwv6EX9JMYnSdRsEt YIcg4YPznUyz2EXbsacljQ77+l02OIyS8PMfQTr4hlqLXTzFm7RjWZcjmK8+pcj3 GKyQIyvWwU51INdaeHewJd3jJGFTBIGEQLkPYnt+IHLvLlkjS5d3NLA/iHxOZ163 BbUc6Yg+I/SNti2ny4ccllJp5hTOPx7vw5GWpprq1Yi2S1pwHGy0rZYueXrdf3tu QEt3V53V9vFYflg8Gic5N3MdqfFFdKsbrgbwfoDkSDJwaz4eyNucUbuazVkasgev 2wyuejIHFCMNWo6zegrp85guCv8Rr7kWdMviMKIjD4aTHS8MrLBHlg00O3IokRMU YPT5JbUwc11oPAGYfHRALw6AuEGry7ddOHJNEEqn9wuz8BRbKvztgWFCc4eM2k3x gZ5fwChBRwsmLt5z0LwT =mRt5 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ___________________________________________________________________________ Philadelphia Linux Users Group -- http://www.phillylinux.org Announcements - http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug-announce General Discussion -- http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
