Re: [PLUG] FOSSCon?

I like answering questions, and am often right. (Not always, but still).

I am also looking into acquiring a large number of thumb drives for loan/use/donation/other.

Yes, I was planning on assisting.  I think I have an available USB stack I can load up.

Which Ubuntu variant, server or desktop?

So, I'm looking to have Arch, Ubuntu and Fedora or CentOS onsite. If I need to set up a repository for Arch so that it can install, I can do that. I was counting on having internet since Arch is mostly a net install.

That being said, I do need flash drives and also volunteers that can answer questions. I had previously asked Keith to assist with this, if he's still able. Any other volunteers are welcome.

I intend to have media for each distro listed above, plus access to the wiki for Arch.

If there's anything that someones wants to be able to install (within reason! No Northstar Linux) then I'm game to have it available. I do also plan on having tutorials on how to update when at home, etc.

STOP.

Con internet is not install update appropriate.

When installs are done at events, recipients are told to update at home.

So, local repos/updates are preferred.

And the last thing/impression you want to have for a new recipient is
"slow" or even far worse, "fail".

It's far easier to tell them to update when they get home. They
understand the reasoning when explained.

Local repos get tricky in the sense of offering multiple install
choices. But anything is better than nothing. So whatever anyone is
willing to do will be gladly accepted.

But as far as the installfest portion - it's far better to approach as
NO INTERNET.

You could always using something like apt-cacher (pre-populated before the
event) to ensure you are minimizing bandwidth impact, while also making
sure the packages are still current. Combined with a pre-seed file to
auto-select the packages and to remove the configuration for apt-cacher
once the install is done, it would make a convenient solution.
