Re: [PLUG] Home wifi access point & router recommendation

Bhaskar,

Late to the party so maybe you have already covered this. Did you try plugging a computer directly into the cable modem and see if it is correctly allocated an address? If so, you should be able to set a static address for the WAN port in the router based on the address allocated, just to get going. What cable modem are you using for Comcast, is it an Arris or something else? I presume that has already been activated by Comcast.

I have found that you have to bring things up in just the right order and timing to get it connected the first time. Power on the cable modem first, wait for the Internet (Online) LED to go green, then power up the router. Failing that, power up the cable modem and router disconnected, once both are up, then connect the cable.

Usually after a few iterations of that, it does manage to negotiate and start talking.

HTH,
Eric

The router arrived in the mail a little less than three weeks after I ordered it. There was a quick start card in Chinese, which I don't know. However, the default admin user (admin) and password were on a sticker on the bottom, so in just a few minutes I was in and talking to OpenWRT via a browser. The Wifi setup went well with no issues. However, the WAN connection to my ISP (Comcast) stubbornly refused to get an IP address. If I look at my cable modem, the connectivity light is on for the cable to the router (and an old router works fine).

So, I'm puzzled as to how troubleshoot the issue. I seem to be searching for the wrong things on Google.

Thanks in advance.

Let's see how it goes… life is an endless experiment.

Thanks, Keith, yes I have tried a complete hardware reset - pressing and holding the little button in the back resets it factory settings. But, sadly, no luck.

Interestingly, while browsing, I saw http://www.aliexpress.com/item/300Mbps-Wireless-Router-OpenWrt-Router-MT7620N-300Mbps-WiFi-Router/32368888701.html and am thinking of trying my chances…

Have you tried a complete hardware reset? For last round of Buffalo's I bought, the WZR-600DHP2, I had to do hardware resets to flash them to more up to date DD-WRT releases since Buffalo has been behind.

It probably won't help since high frequency electronics is more sensitive to power issues but its probably worth a go before you put out the coin.

Thanks for the comments, all.

John & Bill, I have had reasonably good experiences with Buffalo. An earlier router was a Buffalo (I forget the model) that I flashed with Tomato and which got fried (along with a lot of other electronics) in a lightning strike on our house last year. The router I need to replace is a Buffalo N300 (which ships with DD-WRT) I bought to replace that one.

What's peculiar is the failure - refuses to connect with the WAN (cable modem) and get an IP address. The light on the cable modem flashes when I connect the cable to the router, so evidently there is physical connectivity, and the cable is good because it is working now with my old backup router. So, it must be a hardware failure on the NIC of the Buffalo N300 - most peculiar…

Thanks for the other recommendations, all.

Thanks to yesterday's storm, I may need a new home router (currently a Buffalo running DD-WRT). Any recommendations on current models of home routers - I'd prefer one running FOSS if possible, DD_WRT, tomato, etc.? Thank you very much, in advance.
