It turns out that the Red Hat way provides for a "compat-glibc" package.

One yum command and my system is apparently now equipped with glibc 2.12and 2.5 at the same time. Who knew?

Out of curiosity, I checked whether there was a package by that nameavailable for Mint 17. There is not.
