Ladies and (mostly) gents-

Seems that the cron job to run an hourly ls on both attached USB 2 HDs did the trick- haven't had a dropped drive connection since.

Of course, having said this, I now expect that the drives will experience simultaneous catastrophic failure, leaving me totally high + dry.
