I had been running:

sudo update-grub2

pretty much without fail, but without success, either ...

But I also found that I had commented out:

# echo set superusers=grub

So I fixed that, which is probably where my troubles lay.

Then I applied:

sudo update-grub2

and subsequently followed brent timothy saner's suggestion:

sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg


And I got my grub & password back !
