Good info, thanks.  I thought there might be a way to do that.  Debian 8 was the first distro I realized had a decent lvm2 version out of the box.  I keep a custom Debian USB stick for emergencies  :)

You could shoehorn in Debian's package:

https://packages.qa.debian.org/l/lvm2.html

There may be some dependency issues but I have mixed between Debian/Ubuntu for select packages in the past.
