+1 duplicity.

I use duplicity for my primary workstation and gpg encrypt the backups on local storage then zfs replicate them to offsite.  Zfs doesn't do any encryption by itself.

My VM volumes (servers) are just zfs snap/sent offsite nightly.  Zfs (freenas at this time )maintains several old snaps.

I mainly use duplicity for this purpose.  It operates incrementally
but can restore past versions of files, and it supports encryption and
a number of back-ends.
