Seems to me it's a faster and denser memory technology for SSDs. This marketing video is, however, all I know about it: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/intel-optane-technology.html It's very clever to create a trade name that is 1 letter off from the name of a hydrocarbon almost everyone has heard of. Similar, I suppose, to naming your mathematics software "Mathane".
