Among the things that distinguish Mint from Ubuntu is its updating
utility, "mintupdate". For those not familiar, it:
-applies software updates selectively, according to safety rating.
Safety rating is provided only for the Ubuntu and Mint sources,
obviously repos you add, you're on your own with
-allows you to switch between a list of kernels available, and
automatically handles everything that goes along with a switch
-allows you to upgrade to the next point release of the same version
(17.0...17.3)
Apparently an Italian Ubuntu publication has created a version of
mintupdate that runs on Ubuntu, which you can add via PPA:
https://www.unixmen.com/mintupdate-the-default-update-manager-for-linuxmint/
I have not used it.
