On the "Security Now" podcast they often speak positively about the "Ubiquiti Edgerouter X".  I personally do not own one but it's on my Amazon "Wish List" :-) They seem to go for around $70 or less.

My understanding is that they generally all support installing
OpenWRT, however, and in my case I remember it wasn't particularly
difficult to do.  You are correct that it typically isn't stock.
