But if you ever need to try to populate taxonomies from an external data source, you will want to slit your wrists. Any documentation would have helps on why the DB is designed in the wrong way it is!

For those purposes, I use WP All Import ( It's a commercial plugin, but it will take an XML or CSV doc, carve it up, and let you do some slick manipulation to populate the WP DB. Non-ideal that it requires a commercial product to do so, but it's slick.
