How about a 17" Linux-capable laptop with capacity for 2 HDs? 

My preference is to have a 256 gb SSD for the OS and a 0.5 or 1 tb drive for /home

My old^H^H^H ancient Dell Studio 17 laptop died last year and I'm still in mourning.

I have a Zenbook Pro UX501 that is a ton of hardware for the price. It's a bit finicky with Ubuntu, so I can't give a "100% go buy it" recommendation.

system76 has some systems I'd really like to try out. If you're looking for something that is guaranteed to work out of the box it's a pretty good option

Dell XPS 13 and 15 inch are also solid.
