This is something I've been torn on. I really only need something simple but until I discovered the motion software I was using a hand wrapped solution. The bigger problem, as you illustrate, are the cameras which is why I haven't expanded my system yet. Once you get past wireless, wired, PoE or non PoE concerns, you still have the storage and access concerns. I've been considering the Unifi Video system going forward (https://www.ubnt.com/products/#unifivideo) just to be done with it. In my case I don't want anything cloud related but this system can do that or run the cameras in stand alone mode. That is important since even though the cameras are not ONVIF compliant, they can still present a rtsp url which motion can use via my Pi or better yet, a more robust device like one of my fitlet NAS build. Unifi cams are more money but even if I get something like a TrendNET 4k cam, its still more that I was to spend. On the other side of the spectrum, I haven't confirmed any good cheaper cams that will be durable and stand up to the elements. From the reading I did this is an awesome time to be playing with cameras: it seems like for all but the most specialized of needs a $40-$100 consumer grade camera has awesome features and with some exceptions all are standards compliant and plug right into the free Mac/PC/Linux DVRs I’m going to give an yi outdoor camera a try. They are not standards compliant out of the box but there are a few hacks out there. More important though they seem to have the most polished and affordable cloud service which realistically makes the most sense for us. My wife is non-technical so I’d like a plug and play app and I don’t have the time/energy to start another project.
