I haven't used off an off-the-shelf consumer grade device in a bit but when I did / do, I use the Buffalo units with DD-WRT (they're GREAT OpenVPN routers) and if I recall correctly, I think it is off on that firmware by default.

I suspect that others may default on now to make things easy and to avoid bad reviews from people who just want things to work without having to think.

Is UPnP routinely turned on, when you buy a new router? I didn't think it was. Which means you, or something on your LAN, turned it on, in the first place ...

Heartily agreed.
Not to mention RDP, which is (sadly) a huge issue these days.
