I recommend using OpenVPN to access your home network while you're away, instead of opening ports on your router and forwarding them to the cloud server or whatever else you might be running.  If your router doesn't support OpenVPN (Verizon's default router doesn't), then run OpenVPN on one of your internal machines and forward port 1194 to it.
