Re: [PLUG] MS strategy and linux

Opening DirectX won't happen, unless and until MS has a kernel fork ready to go, somehow. They already spiked DirectX, as such, they no longer release updated versions, they instead built it into Windows 8+ directly, and the various technologies (DirectSound, Direct3D, DirectPlay) are changing names and/or being replaced by successor techs. A paranoid mind would say they are doing that to more tightly couple the gaming interface into the general OS code.

We have heard the classic mantra before of "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish". However, remember that the difference now is that Microsoft has a cloud hosting business where over 50% is Linux. More so, Azure is powered by Linux completely. So, this time may legitimately be different. Also different from before was Microsoft being on the top 5 entities submitting kernel work.

It would be wise to exercise caution as mentioned and don't go all in on this Microsoft loves Linux thing. But don't be so skiddish to not give it a shot. The sign that the windows desktop is officially over and a new leaf has been turned is when Microsoft open sources direct x.
