Re: [PLUG] [External] Re: Where to Buy Nerd Stuff

Thanks to a correction from a fellow plugger, MARC's hamfest is usually in kimberton, closer to valley forge not as far out as the PA ren fair. It's been some years, http://www.marc-radio.org/hamfest2.htm

I've never been to the TCF, always was curious to go. And there are several hamfests in the area every year. I went to the MARC one a few years ago, it's out near the PA ren faire.

Oh yes of course! TCF. How soon we (I) forget :-(

I went there for many years starting about 1984. I built several computers and enhanced many more from parts. One I built was my 800 MHz Athlon system which lasted for 4 or 5 years until the processor got fried (they were big heat generators IIRC.)
The flea market was incredible - at one point I recall a couple of VAX 11/780's out there ready to be hooked up to the 220V/3ph power source of your choice.
I wisely skipped that booth.

Heard some great talks too.

There's also the Trenton Computer Festival. It's sadly virtual this
year, but in normal times they've got an amazing outdoor flea market
which is a great place to find vintage computer gear.

But with the demise of Radioshack and the onset of the COVID era, MicroCenter is the best all we have in the area right now. They're a whole lot better than nothing, even if their offerings are a bit skewed in the "science fair project" direction at times. Aside from MicroCenter, Harbor Freight chain stores might be of minor interest as a place to get some tools and supplies, and Ham Radio Outlet in New Castle, DE might still be of interest to non-hams if you need any high-end rechargeable batteries, solar panels, or fancy electrical connectors for any of your projects.

Hacker meetups like HOPE in NYC and the various BSides, enthusiast events like the retro videogame expo in Oaks, Allentown Pinball Festival, Vintage Computer Festival in Wall NJ, Gloucester County Hamfest in Mullica Hill NJ... all of them with a unique and eclectic selection of nerd junk that I miss quite badly. I'm guessing a couple of them are going to try to bravely (foolishly?) start up again this year but the attendance/selection will be quite lackluster unless we all get our vaccines REAL soon. Fingers crossed!

Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.
