The reference is to Ne9l Stephenson’s Cryptonomicon, a fictional novel about cryptography that bounces back and forth between WWII and the near past, but culturally applicable today.

 

Still, good reply! LOL.  I’ll bet Cthulhu in User Friendly knows Perl. He and Crud Puppy pair on a translation project.
