My old HTC One E8 had a bad experience updating it's factory Android version and ended up unable to run.

I loaded LineageOS and had a fully functional phone for another year or so before the battery got too old.  It was then cheaper to get a new phone than replace the battery but while it lasted I was quite happy with LineageOS.  No problems with my company's Two Factor Authentication app or with any of the banking apps I use.

I just found a tutorial on how to load it online and was up and running fairly quickly.
