Re: [PLUG] Upgrading Kubuntu 18.04 -> 22.04

I echo what everyone else has said — go to 20.04 first, and wait until 22.04.1 if you're feeling conservative. I'd recommend doing a full backup right before you start the upgrade process in case anything comes up and you want to fall back.

Of course, another option is to stay on 18.04. You've already been running it for 4 years, and it's going to be supported until 2028. Why not just stay there?

I have a machine with Kubuntu 18.04, which I have been waiting for 22.04 (release next week) to update.

The website says there is no direct upgrade-in-place option 18.04 -> 22.04, only 20.04 -> 22.04.

So it seems I have two choices:

  1. Install from scratch
  2. Upgrade 18.04 -> 20.04, then upgrade 20.04 -> 22.04

My instinct tells me 1. might produce a better, more-stable result, but maybe that’s a dated way of looking at things.  If you’ve done an 18.04 -> 20.04 upgrade, did it produce a good result and are you planning to upgrade 20.04 -> 22.04?  Or would I be better served making the effort to do a fresh install?
