If you've done an 18.04 -> 20.04 upgrade, did it produce a good result and are you planning to upgrade 20.04 -> 22.04? Or would I be better served making the effort to do a fresh install?

I never reinstall from scratch. Keeping a system alive is part of the
computing skillset. i want to solve problems that make people
reinstall, so that I can later rescue systems.

I am very aggressive with software updates. Most bugs I see on
upgrades are issues where somebody permanently broke something for me,
but it isn't a formal bug that they would fix (I am looking at you
Xorg). I have to deal with those issues no matter how I do the
updates, and I want to do it as soon as possible before my local
software gets more complex.

I like release candidates. The last-minute rushed fixes right before
release do the most damage IMHO. In FreeBSD in particular RCs are
gold. And if you are running a release candidate you can watch the
(few) changes coming in and decide whether you want them right now.
That way you can survive until the .1 release while already
benefiting from/adjust your stuff to the new packages.
