I never reinstall from scratch.  Keeping a system alive is part of the
computing skillset.  i want to solve problems that make people
reinstall, so that I can later rescue systems.

Of course, one of the best ways to keep systems alive is to not install updates. :)

I am very aggressive with software updates.  Most bugs I see on
upgrades are issues where somebody permanently broke something for me,
but it isn't a formal bug that they would fix (I am looking at you
Xorg).  I have to deal with those issues no matter how I do the
updates, and I want to do it as soon as possible before my local
software gets more complex.

I’m aggressive with software updates on Ubuntu since between releases they’re all security updates and bug fixes. I’m also pretty aggressive with updating to new releases, both for the reasons you gave and because I like trying out the new features. I’m less aggressive upgrading my box at work because I can’t afford to spend time patching it if anything breaks. Fortunately I have pretty much the same set of packages installed at home and work, so by the time I get around to upgrading work I have a pretty good sense of what the issues will be.

Of course, it’s not perfect. Something changed in the libraries on 20.04 and now I have trouble running parts of Matlab. Or maybe those parts were always broken. it’s hard to tell with Matlab!

I like release candidates.  The last-minute rushed fixes right before
release do the most damage IMHO.  In FreeBSD in particular RCs are
gold.  And if you are running a release candidate you can watch the
(few) changes coming in and decide whether you want them right now.
That way you can survive until the .1 release while already
benefiting from/adjust your stuff to the new packages.

I’m glad someone likes release candidates so the rest of us can wait until the bugs in them get fixed. :)
