You can look up just about any place where this topic is seriously discussed for countless examples of this being an issue. The registry hive is the most obvious example. If you want to demonstrate this for yourself, go ahead and try to make a copy of C:\Users\<username>\NTUSER.DAT Hence the reason for requirement #3. Like I originally said, I realize that without VSS I'd get a 99.9% complete backup.
