[PLUG] Ubuntu distro update 22.04 LTS -> 24.04 LTS fails

Hi, everyone. I'm attempting to upgrade from 22.04 to 24.04.


sudo do-release-upgrade fails with

Error during update

A problem occurred during the update. This is usually some sort of
network problem, please check your network connection and retry.


Restoring original system state

Aborting
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done

Needless to say, there is nothing wrong with the network connection,  
as the receipt of this email proves.

Actions taken: opening port 1022 for "upgrade backup" as suggested by nixcraft

Opening Software Updater -> Other Software and disabling any active  
volume (which was just some application software)

Running do-release upgrade with -d and explicitly provided the version name.

Browsed syslog to see what clues it might provide. I see this repeated  
several times, corresponding to my attempts to upgrade:

None of this proved effective. A google search revealed that the  
upgrade path to 24.04 has been less than what NASA calls "nominal".  
Has anyone else struggled with this?
