How is this different from human intelligence? I mean, it seems controversial these days to even try to define that in any objective way. To be able to say that an LLM is more or less intelligent than a person requires being able to be able to say whether one human is more or less intelligent than another human. The semblance of a thing is ultimately no different from the thing. There is no dispute that the physical implementation of an LLM is different from analogous functions in a human brain, of course. So in this sense it doesn't really seem like they are the same in the first place. As far as the functionality goes though, both humans and LLMs seem to attempt to be implementations striving for a similar goal... > It's just a lot of data (created by humans) compiled into an enormous database How is that any different from what you or I know? Sure, the implementation of that database is a little different, and I'd argue that an LLM isn't really a "database" in the typical sense. Now, the one caveat which I would concede is that LLMs do not learn in realtime like a person or animal does. So, aspects of intelligence that rely on this certainly would differ. > As a result, the data has a reliability factor of exactly zero. What is the reliability factor of a human being? To err is human. I think that the sorts of maddening LLM behaviors people complain about are some of their most humanlike qualities. > Everything I've read says there's no real path from current LLM's to actual AI's. Since nobody knows how to make an actual AI, this is pretty speculative. Certainly core aspects of human intelligence are missing from LLMs, but whether LLMs would serve well as a component of such a general AI is unknown.
