[PLUG] Using DD to backup main disk when PC running

I'm currently using the DD util to copy my entire main disk (/dev/sda)
to a secondary disk (/dev/sdc) while my PC is up and running (no apps
loaded).

It seems to work fine, but I'm not clear on the theory of whether this
is considered bad practice or not.

Is DD likely to mess up the source file system at all (seeing as it's
mounted).
