[PLUG] What log file handles shutting down status msgs?

My Linux install has suddenly developed a big problem when shutting down
(not when booting up).

During the daemon unloads, I suddenly get a msg something like:

"Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address
00000056."

When I press <Cntl><Alt><Del>,
"Stopping vmware /dev/vmmon: Module vmmon unloaded.
bridge-eth0: detached"

Then nothing else responds, I have to do a hard boot.

Linux seems to start fine again, but always has this closing down
problem.

I tried disabling the vmware startup script in /etc/rc.d/init.d/vmware.
This did indeed stop the shutdown issue.

I need to find the error/status msgs in a log so that I can get some
decent support from someone.
What log would have this information in?
