I know it's not what you are looking for, but for general awareness, I just want to plug the Framework laptop. Only comes in a basic 13" model, same rough size/weight/thickness as a Macbook Pro 13" (half-ish the price), but it's braindead simple to work on, all parts (no, seriously, *ALL*) are stocked and available individually at reasonable prices (no registration/account/proof of purchase needed), build quality is quite nice, and they semi-officially support Linux. (Official-official support is Windows 11 only, but on the page it lets you select "No OS, I'll provide my own" and there are a number of prominently linked writeups from users on installing a large number of distros.) All the parts are basic/standard, so you can BYO/self-source ram, NVMe SSD, wifi+bt. The options for those in the store are also more or less in line with retail, and all name brand stuff (RAM in mine was Samsung, SSD was WD). The screen is a nice 3:2 aspect ~WQHD resolution, it runs any distro I've tried with little to zero tinkering or customization. They even include the only tools you need for any work/repairs in the box when you buy. It's a single Torx/Philips driver, with a spudger/pry at the other end. All the parts have QR codes on them that link straight to the store page, and prices are very reasonable (full display is ~160$, battery is 60$ and easy to replace, speakers were 19$, etc).
All external ports are modular/swappable and connect to the system board with USB-C. Charging also via USB-C and it's not picky who it'll talk to.
I strongly recommend the base i5 option. The two "upgrade" CPUs stretch the cooling capacity of the chassis a little and are less pleasant to live with in close quarters. The base i5 is quiet and well-behaved, and has the new Intel Big-Little design, so if your kernel understands that, it makes performance and battery life better, too.
I got the Chromebook version, which is very nice if you don't mind Big Brother Google. Minimal price difference, but you don't get the fprint reader in the power button.

I have about had it.
Now I'm back to the Touchpad of Death, but it's worse - now it can jump
up an entire page and randomly select text. This thing has torqued me
off for the last time.
After having ransomed my car from Delco and the useless state of PA, I'm
back to the start of Backup Laptop fund.
Suggestions for decent used 17" appreciated. I've been looking online
but not sure of reputations.
