Re: [PLUG] Type with your voice on Linux using this Whisper-based app

Not sure why the app is so large, perhaps because it's a GUI. Here's another one that seems to do the same thing with a half-dozen lines of script. The 40MB model works quite well as is. There are others available.

100% local, no internet connection needed after the initial model download.

One caution with any of these SSTs... If you're in a noisy environment and switch to any other app, it will keep typing away and you might not want that. Try using in a text editor first to get the hang of starting and stopping it.

Even though it says that the model works offline, with on-device

agreed.
It's a shame.

The github project
says it has optional text polishing with LLMs like Anthropic, Google,
and OpenAI, and then everything you say is going out into the cloud.

It’s able to simulate type via the XDG Desktop Portal. Per the project docs,
this works with all major desktop environments including GNOME and KDE as
well as on both X11 and Wayland. The app nudges you to give it relevant
permissions when you run it.

Speed of Sound is free, open source software available to install from
Flathub and the Snap Store, with AppImage, Deb, and RPM packages available
from the GitHub releases page.
