[PLUG] [plug-announce] Tue Jul 14 - PLUG North - "The Source Awakens: Open Source on IBM Z in a Multi-Architecture World" by Elizabeth Joseph (7pm at SkySwitch)

Hi all,

PLUG North will not be meeting this coming Tuesday, since it's only the first Tuesday of the month. PLUG North meets on the second Tuesday of each month.

PLUG North will be meeting next Tuesday, July 14, at SkySwitch's offices in Blue Bell, beginning at 7 PM. Directions to the meeting location can be found at the end of this email.

This month, PLUG welcomes back Elizabeth Joseph, who leads the Open Source Office for IBM Z and LinuxOne at IBM. Lyz will be giving her quasi-annual talk on open source at IBM. Her talk this year is entitled "The Source Awakens: Open Source on IBM Z in a Multi-Architecture World".

As a follow-up to the talk I gave last summer, this talk takes a look at what's changed over the past year as open source continues to expand in the mainframe world, and across other architectures too. We're seeing more purpose-built architectures - ARM is everywhere, RISC-V keeps gaining momentum, and even newer options like LoongArch64 are gaining support. The "source awakening," so to speak, isn’t about any one platform, but about a broader shift toward meeting different workloads with different architectural strengths. IBM Z fits into that same landscape, with decades of engineering behind it and its own set of capabilities.

Beyond multiarch, I'll walk through what open source looks like today on IBM Z and LinuxONE. We'll look at modern build and CI/CD workflows for s390x that are available to open source communities. We're also going to try and take a sneak peek at rpmport and dnf5port, young projects aimed at making it easier to use familiar RPM-based tooling in IBM z/OS UNIX System Services (USS), instead of relying on platform-specific packaging systems.

I'll conclude by sharing how you can access these systems yourself, including options like IBM Z Xplore and the IBM LinuxONE Community Cloud environments.
